Die Verlierer (Punk - Berlin)
We're only halfway through this latest trip around the sun, but I have no doubt that this debut will rate as one of the best punk records of 2022. There's an appealing sleaze emanating from DIE VERLIERER. They wear suits like cooler-than-thou continental types, but they rock the fuck out like gutter-dwelling amphetamine enthusiasts. Debonair, but damaged. “Die Zeit” kicks off with thrilling, dark energy like SODS on Minutes to Go. This smashing opener is backed up by “Die Verlierer” (“The Losers”), which pulls a similar trick by effortlessly channeling Dagger & Guitar-era SORT SOL. But let's not paint DIE VERLIERER into a Denmark-shaped corner—I'm just trying to establish the rarified atmosphere that we are floating in. A slashing guitar tears into “Intrige und Libido” and ratchets the tension up as the bass lands every punch it throws, and the barely-in-control singing is like DIETER MEIER at his incandescent early peak. I've probably listened to this song at least a hundred times in the last few months. Absolute punk perfection. “Plastic Life” is like the encore of a gloriously shambolic STRANGLERS gig; I can almost hear the crowd singing along like a chorus of shithoused angels. DIE VERLIERER can actually swing, and this skill alone sets them apart from a vast landscape of indistinguishable simulation rockers. “Mann im Mond” is the CURE reincarnated as street toughs; fierce romantics, sensitive brawlers. “Nichts Funktioniert” is desperate and flailing punk that demonstrates true mastery of the form. This is the kind of song to inspire hordes of punks to treat desolate urban sprawl as the adult playground it surely is. Structures, after all, are just objects to bounce ideas off; bodies too. Just keep your eye out for the cops. That's when “X Ray Vision” comes in handy. “Deadgirl” is the kind of love song no one writes anymore. That could be a positive development—from a certain point of view—but hey, fatalism is hot, and always will be. Listen, I don't make the rules. Speaking of which, “Into A” is an epic last gasp that shamelessly nicks the BIRTHDAY PARTY's “Deep in the Woods.” If you're gonna steal, do it from the best, and yeah, add some phased vocals to the funeral proceedings and drag that sucker out like a corpse ‘til it's six feet under. Hell of a record here.

NAG (Étrange mélange de Punk sombre entrecoupé de bruits intergalactiques - Atlanta, USA)
If you're looking for straightforward hardcore or punk, maybe look elsewhere, but if you're in the mood for that creepy, kind of surreal, Outer Limits-inspired punk, then stick around. NAG from Atlanta, Georgia released Human Coward Coyote earlier this year as a fresh addition to their growing catalog. This new album pushes the punk element deeper with a bit more raw production and in-your-face drums. If you've ever enjoyed the work of A FRAMES, then you'll like this. There's even elements that remind me of the ADOLESCENTS and a bit of AGENT ORANGE. Overall, it's a fast, fun blend of darker punk interspersed with some intergalactic noise.
https://werenag.bandcamp.com

Italian band ASTIO calls Trento (a city in the foothills of the Italian Alps) home, and they create haunting, riff-heavy punk that stomps and pogos. Bocche Stanche is a six-song 12” that would be a welcome addition to almost any record collection. ASTIO uses this release to give a tutorial on how to shred while also creating a groovy enough environment that the inclusion of saxophone is totally welcome! The vocal delivery has a raw but not overly abrasive quality, while the rhythm section is featured pretty forward in the mix and is the total heart of this groove machine.

Parsnip (60's Psych Pop - Melbourne, Australie)
Green shoots have burst forth from Parsnip, let's warmly welcome the Australian group's sophomore album "Behold". Recorded across three sessions over the last three years, "Behold" is a testament to Parsnip at their most creative, catchy and collaborative. This album showcases the multi-talents of all four members, with spirited performances adding dazzle to the thirteen tracks. Paris Richens lets the bass playfully roam. Carolyn Hawkins tumbles feeling into the drum rumble. Stella Rennex's guitar soars alongside her saxophone work, whilst a sprightly keyboard is tenderly attended by Rebecca Liston. Everyone sings amidst this lush canopy.
Patience, environmental cues and internal signals are integral for a garden to flourish. The same can be said of the conditions necessary for "Behold" to emerge. It is an album gleeful in reassessment, changed priorities and anticipation. The roots are deeply anchored to mystery, drinking up a hidden wonderment that lies within. "Monument" is a twist of melody and mania, "For what am I? But a channel of light" they attest amongst the whoops and hollers. "The Babble" sounds like Ray Davies playing Wordle for enlightenment. In fact most of these songs are pointing the way towards growth and understanding. "Turn to Love" is mesmeric and timeless, thoroughly serene and perfectly judged. Parsnip write songs as a form of communion with the intangible in our increasingly delusory world, but there is always a gentle reminder; don't take anything too seriously! "My head is gonna split in two, fix it with flour and glue" they demand on ultimate bop "Papier-Mâché", this juxtaposition of mature resolve with childlike astonishment packs a more powerful punch.
On "Behold", Parsnip explore both the inner and outer realms of consciousness with quick wits and some seriously quality jangle and jolt. "The Light" is a whip smart workout, sprouting naturally from the propulsive nature of their debut album "When the Tree Bears Fruit" (2019). "Placeholder" is also devastatingly honest and channels The Field Mice as it buries itself like an arrow into your heart. The production is ambitious, with 12-string and acoustic guitars, percussion, piano, saxophone and harmonium all sitting comfortably in these outstanding songs. Drawing comparisons with Dolly Mixture, Sara Goes Pop and Look Blue Go Purple, Parsnip are an animated ensemble, full of life, emotional complexity and humour. The laughter in the dark is real, but then the sun comes up and we all must meet the day. Even the flowers turn their faces. Behold!

The dramatic vocals, ranging from yelling and shouting to spoken word, are accompanied by a procession of razor sharp guitar riffage, punchy bass and tight drumming all culminating into the bleak punk record that doesn't shy from some of its influences, one of which is definitely GRČ's cult dark punk album "Sloboda Narodu". There's also something in the sound that reminds us of the death rock witchcraft CHRISTIAN DEATH's RIKK AGNEW managed to pull off on their classic Only Theatre of Pain, but at the same time we must mention PADKAROSDA, a fairly recent band whose legacy sneaked from Budapest into Zagreb's DIY rehearsal basements. Don't sleep on this amazing record, it's huge.

Tyvek (DIY Garage Punk génies - Detroit, USA)
Throughout perpetual, necessary shifting, Detroit's Tyvek have remained a singular force. The group was formed somewhere in the mid-aughts by songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and sole consistent band member Kevin Boyer, who enlisted various friends to cultivate a raw, rudimentary punk sound that manages to get back to basics while at the same time presenting abstract perspectives and weird concepts not normally explored by your everyday garage band. There have been mutations over the years as the band toured regularly and released a run of solid albums with labels like Siltbreeze and In The Red, but with every reformation, Tyvek still didn't sound quite like anyone else. Their new album, the self released Overground (Ginkgo, 2023), stays true to their reputation for delivering hit after hit of blistering punk and remains tightly wound until it unspools into the dreamlike title track, an extended post Velvets plea for human decency. Tyvek's current line-up of all-stars guarantee an intense live show: Shelley Salant (Shells, XV), Alex Glendening (Deadbeat Beat), Fred Thomas (Idle Ray), and Emily Roll (XV) channel the high-energy rock'n'roll of Detroit's past while side-stepping the cliches to push forward into an uncharted future.

Parnepar (Post-Punk Art Punk - Zagreb, Croatie)
After we released "Kako, Molim?" demo tape at the end of the 2018, here is the brand new offering of probably the only band from ex-Yugoslavia region that's taking strong influences from the 80's post punk & new wave music from the same area. This time the band recorded their first full length album by themselves filled with a lot of local charm we all dig and love. Heavy vibes of Yugo post punk forces Šarlo Akrobata, Dobri Isak and early output of Električni Orgazam are still more than obvious, but it's also hard not to mention echoes of the more obscure acts like Defekno Efektni. Parnepar surely has unique character and approach in writing lyrics and doing music collages and we are glad that this three relatively young weirdos are still into making refreshing and interesting music. It's nice to feel something different in a Croatian punk scene which is mainly composed of straight forward punk and hardcore bands.

Précipice (Hardcore Punk - Nantes)
Hailing from Nantes, Precipice's debut album, Down The Well, is a fierce slab of urgently claustrophobic, deeply discomfiting hardcore. The leanly abrasive guitars are laced through with flares of dissonant melody and eerily off-kilter leads, while underpinned by spryly punchy bass lines and burly, uncompromising drumming. Meanwhile, the desperation-soaked vocals are steeped in a bleak cocktail that is equal parts revulsion and anxious exhaustion. This is a desolation provoked by the commoditisation, often with our complicity, of our lives and cities to serve the interests of capital and technology. As the album's relentlessly agitated patterns emerge, shadows of early 1980s' pioneers such as Die Kreuzen and Mecht Mensch are evoked, as well as those of more contemporary exponents such as Permission. The unsettling atmosphere is, perhaps, best captured by the serpentine discordance of Maze Spectacle and the ferocious contortions of Disguised.

DG #86

Damaged Good présente :

Sun Custo (Indie Pop Lo-Fi Weird Punk - Suisse)
https://suncousto.bandcamp.com

Kontexte (No Punk rotatif No Wave plouf - Nantes/Bruxelles)
PLOF!
https://legomanrecords.bandcamp.com/track/kontexte

Enid Gay (Piano bar - Nantes)
Tout ça pendant que Frank Sinatra chante "do be do be do" en maintenant une posture compromettante... A cry for help. Organza fits a struggling life...
